If a company overpaid for an acquisition, that's probably going to show up in the earnings themselves, goodwill amortization aside. As an analyst doing my homework, I am going to pick that up. What I am talking about is a systematic penalty for companies that grow by acquiring good businesses at above book value. A couple companies where goodwill accounting is critical to understanding the value:
Disney
Dover
Lear
Nacco
