Don, thanks for a very informative vignette. This is one of the major drawbacks that Compaq will face in trying to reengineer itself into a direct marketer.

To make matters worse, throw in distributors who are being undercut by the manufacturer. Not a pretty picture! I expect we will begin to see some negative comments about Compaq in journals like Computer Reseller News (I think that's the name of the outfit).

Thanks for the info on Compaq's new plan...it seems like they do everything wrong, they just dont understand, do they? Either you use the retail or you dont: if you do both you do, indeed, enrage the retailers and there are plenty of other machines to sell.
I feel more comfortable now about CPQ's move.
And why to stay out of the stock!
