The boat is all hand made and very costly.It made up of different pieces of wood all joined together with coir fiber cords by master craftsman.There is a snake boat race not far from house every year during Onam and is sponsored by the local temple.The other famous one is near Allapuzha,there most boats are owned by prominent families in the area,mostly Christian and Hindus.The snake boat building is dying art but now the government and local people are doing everything to make sure this doesn't happen.The important part of it is all is that all this is done strictly for the fun of it and is not done for the money,though now it attracts a lot of tourists and is a revenue source for the state government.Glad you to hear you enjoyed it. I will take look at India Today,thanks. Now here is one hell of an Indian company,may be I'll take a look at it and put some money in it. rediff.com
