The reason I think X-Mas 99 is too late is that there are lots of folks (me included) who won't buy a DVD for their TV set until they are recordable. Now that you know they just over the horizon, why buy a DVD player for a TV at this point? This announcement could actually hurt short term DVD sales.

Re the DVD-RAM for computers, they need to roll those puppies out real soon. I have one and to be honest I have found very few uses (very little software on DVD, video quality when connected to a TV is poor, ...). I have lots of friends w/ DVD drives on their computer who have reached the same conclusion. If it is recordable then it becomes a much more useful device. If more software is not developed soon, or the ability to record is not there, the DVD format will just go the way of the laser disc players and eight tracks. I don't think the format has another year to play around and prove its worth.
