RE: Grandfather of the semiconductor industry

I think that title has to go to the recently deceased but very fertile Fairchild Semiconductor or even to Shockley Labs, or perhaps Bell Labs. Intel, of course, has sired many companies, mostly on the wrong side of the blanket so they don't claim their ancestry. Has AMD sired anyone? Or is it actually a eunuch that would have to be labeled "sterile great uncle" of the semiconductor industry? Just asking.
