Mary and all -
These are not products in the class of the 'cheap servers' you are describing. CPQ and the other majors would not have much interest in making a market in junk 486 boxes.

The thin server or appliance server concept is very different. The systems you describe have no other benefit aside from low cost - they are still difficult to administer and support. Thin servers in the appliance category have advanced remote management and diagnostic capability and greatly reduced costs for setup and administration. They do not use underpowered CPUs or outdated software. It is a different concept from current server packaging.

Although I seem to be getting a lot of resistance to the validity of this concept here on the thread I can assure you that Intel management does not take the concept lightly and has been working programs with the major OEMs throughout 1998 to define the concepts and understand how they want to play in that market.

I would like to provide more detailed information which might clear up some of the confusion but I can not disclose more at this time. Products in this category will appear within the next few months and that should eliminate any misunderstandings.
