New poll shows Fong, Boxer in statistical tie

By John Howard, Associated Press

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — State Treasurer Matt Fong has narrowed the
gap on Sen. Barbara Boxer in their Senate race to a statistical tie, according to a
poll released Saturday.

The San Francisco Examiner/KTVU poll showed Boxer supported by 45
percent of those surveyed and Fong 43 percent. The margin of error in the survey
of 809 likely voters was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Other polls this week had put the incumbent Democrat's lead over Fong at 5 to 9
points, with margins of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

For the financially strapped Fong, the weekend marked a final run at Boxer,
whom he attacked in a lone TV spot painting her as too liberal for California's
mainstream.

Also Saturday, Boxer spoke to 150 campaign workers in San Francisco, then
headed north to Sonoma County to visit a Democratic phone bank with former
Texas Gov. Ann Richards. At the San Francisco event, she urged volunteers to
get out the vote.

"Put the poll numbers out of your mind. I predicted two years ago that this would
be a two to five point race. ... It's going to be close no matter what anyone tells
you,'' she said. Everything, she added, "depends on turnout.''

Fong was joined by Gov. Pete Wilson in San Diego at a rally supporting
Proposition 8, which would require competency testing for teachers and set up a
state inspector for public schools.
