Your "what is proper ammunition" analogy is what reminded me so much of the Senator Joe McCarthy anti-Communist campaign. The tactics used then were so un-American, so despicable, that they have gone down as a lesson on the possible excesses of government.

I think we have the same thing again.... "... never mind what rights of the people we are trampling, it is the bigger issue that is important."

And to think of it, as far as I know at least, not a single Republican has stood up and said anything like ... "I think we have gone over the edge here, the process we have undertaken has been unfair and improper, etc." You would think that of all the Republican congressmen and senators, at least one would harbor such feelings. I guess it isn't worth the risk to then to state them.
