David - Re: "Does INTC plan to build any new fabs identical to Ireland in the future and if so where and when"

Intel has TWO 8 inch wafer fabs in Ireland - Fab 10 and Fab 14. Fab 10 came on stream in 1993 and Fab 14 came on stream at the beginning of this year, 1998.

Fab 14 will probably be Intel's last 0.25 micron wafer fab. Intel is currently completing Fab 18 in Israel which will start out as a 0.18 micron wafer fab on 8 inch wafers.

Although Intel's fabs run different processes, much of the equipment is interchangeable. The wafer stepper/scanners for printing images are one major difference, however.

I would suspect that Intel's next NEW wafer facilities will be designed and equipped to handle 12 inch (300 mm ) wafers, and that may mean no new wafer fabs are planned until 300 mm wafer equipment becomes commercially available. This includes FAB 16 in Fort Worth which has been halted for almost a year.

Older fabs will, in the meantime, be converted to 0.18 micron processing.
