Excel Switching's ONE Architecture EXS Platform to be Integrated into an Enhanced Service Platform from Lucent Technologies

HYANNIS, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--Excel Switching Corporation (Nasdaq:XLSW - news), a leading provider of open switching platforms for telecommunications networks worldwide, announced today that it has entered into a multi-year OEM contract with Lucent Technologies Octel Messaging Division (NYSE:LU - news), headquartered in Milpitas, Calif. Lucent intends to integrate Excel's programmable solution, the ONE Architecture(tm) Expandable Switching System (EXS), into a future enhanced voice messaging services platform, offering carriers an advanced service solution.

Excel's EXS platform will provide Lucent with reliable and scaleable switching functionality for its enhanced services platform at a low cost. Because the EXS platform is programmable, the intelligence of the application supplied by Lucent can reside in an external host application. In addition, the switch will allow Lucent to easily connect to heterogeneous networks by acting as a network interface unit.

''We are pleased that Lucent has chosen Excel's ONE Architecture EXS as the platform on which to deploy its planned enhanced services,'' said Robert Madonna, president and CEO of Excel. ''One of Excel's key advantages in the enhanced service market -- a programmable switching solution that is scaleable, flexible and based on industry standards -- can now be leveraged by Lucent to offer its customers a feature-rich solution that will adapt to changing market demands.''

The flexibility of the EXS solution will allow carriers to customize their offerings by providing additional services on Lucent's future enhanced services platform, allowing carriers to generate additional revenue while providing more value-added services to customers.

''We are pleased to be working with Excel to integrate the switching capability we need to deploy a reliable enhanced services platform to our customers,'' said J. Kim Fennell, senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider Messaging Group, Lucent Octel Messaging Division. ''Because voice messaging is an important service for carriers, it was important that we chose a flexible and scaleable solution to accommodate the changing needs of our customers.''
