EVEN LATIN LOVE DOESN'T NECESSARILY LAST FOREVER

Italian men have a certain reputation--consider Casanova, Dante, those gigolos lurking around the Trevi Fountain.

But American women looking for long-lasting love might do better by staying within our own borders. According to the Italian magazine D, la Repubblica delle Donne, the modern Latin Lover isn't all that enduringly passionate.

This humbling verdict springs from a recent survey conducted by Durex, a condom manufacturer. It reveals a rather discomfitting fact: The sexual encounters of Italian men last only an average of 13.8 minutes, well under the world average of 19.9 minutes and falling way short of Australia's 20.7.

Which nationality held its own the longest? The United States, at 25.3 minutes per encounter.

Since timing is everything, perhaps it's no coincidence that just as the survey was published last month, prescription-only Viagra went on sale for the first time in Italy.
