Hi Tommaso, I don't think we are facing a 1930's style contraction. Wish I could post a few charts to make my point, but I think I need a web site, or else I could email them. We might be facing a stock market crash, but most historians agree that the crash didn't cause the depression. They disagree as to whether the depression (which started in other parts of the world, and in the rural parts of the US) prior to 1929 caused the crash, or whether they simply shared some causes. You may enjoy playing with the data on Yahoo, which has Dow all the way back to 1928, NYSE back to 1966 and S&P back to 1970 (think this is right, you might want to check it). You can download into Excel, but don't follow Yahoo instructions, save it as .xls file. You can chart the data. Fun!

Dow is:

NYSE is:
chart.yahoo.com^NYA

S&P is:
chart.yahoo.com^SPC
