Marty, The "connected" car <<LSDV DEMONSTRATES FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE INFOTRONICS DEARBORN, MI, October 19, 1998 -- Ford engineers have dubbed it the Lifestyle Demonstration Vehicle or LSDV. Others may call it the future of automotive electronic technology. No matter what you call it, LSDV demonstrates Ford's efforts to integrate next-generation technology into cars and trucks customers will soon be driving. Many of LSDV's features, including a portable subnotebook computer and voice activated e-mail and news information applications, come from Ford's continuing partnership with the computer industry. "Our goal is to develop next-generation interactive systems that blend information, communication and entertainment technologies into the everyday driving experience -- without complicating the basics of operating cars and trucks," said Richard Parry Jones, Ford group vice president-Product Development. Parry-Jones was speaking at Convergence '98, a conference for the auto, computer and electronics industries. The LSDV features a complete voice-controlled home office environment, including internet connectivity for e-mail, news retrieval and calendar scheduling functions -- all linked to a printer in the glove box.
