DownSouth: How do you view competition with Inktomi?

I'm new to this thread but have followed NTAP for about 2 years. I've owned it off and on during that time and am recently out again. I also EMC. I do not own Inktomi (way too expensive) but the company seems to be doing well.

With respect to internet caching products, I understand that Inktomi's solution is software on standard server HW and NTAP is an "appliance" consisting of both HW and SW. Assuming equivalent software, the tradeoff is custom HW with better performance for a higher cost. The questions are:

1. Does NTAP's SW have an advantage over Intomi's?

2. Is there a significant performance and/or operating advantage to NTAP's HW?

3. If NTAP's advantages are overwhelming, why is Inktomi doing so well in this area? Is this simply a matter of customers trying out the concept with a less costly commitment (SW from Inktomi on reusable HW)?

Just trying to understand. Thanks in advance.
