(Copyright (c) 1998, Business Wire)

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1998--

Encode and Edit in MPEG -2 With Software Only for $249
The VITEC Toolbox-2 is the first software kit to provide a combination of complete AVI (Audio Video Interleave -- the most common format for audio/video data on the PC) file format encoding into true MPEG 1 and 2 digital video.

It also provides the extensive MPEG -2 editing capabilities of the award-winning VITEC Multimedia Video Clip MPEG -2 "SE" Editor.

"The revolutionary VITEC Toolbox-2 will allow users to convert a large gigabyte AVI file into a smaller MPEG -2 file taking up only megabytes of storage space," according to Lionel Zajde, Sales and Marketing Manager for VITEC Multimedia. "The new MPEG -2 file will fit one hour of video onto a CD-R and is a small enough file to be saved or stored on a standard PC computer," Zajde added.

Toolbox-2 can turn any AVI capture board into true MPEG -2 digital video and will convert AVI files and still image list into MPEG -2 audio, video and system files. Featuring Windows software on '95, '98 and NT, Toolbox-2 is fully compatible with all MPEG -2 decoders on the market.

The unprecedented MPEG -2 SE editing software will edit MPEG -2 in a native format, with no dedicated hardware required. Also featured: copy and paste editing or pre-editing of video clips and the ability to clean up the end points of existing clips without re-encoding the entire file. Applications include: marketing presentations, kiosks presentations, training applications, MPEG -2 archival, etc.

The new encoder/editor package will allow low cost encoding of MPEG -2 sequences along with copy-n-paste of the MPEG -2 sequence. The VITEC Toolbox-2 is available as a complete product and is priced at $249. Toolbox-2 is also available in OEM versions as well.

In business since 1988, VITEC provides sales and tech support services for U.S. and Canadian customers from its U.S. headquarters located in Sunnyvale. Products are also available from Paris and from distributors and resellers throughout the world.

Other VITEC products include: MCM ( MPEG -Cut Machine) -- "the ultimate turnkey solution for multimedia presentation and creation of Video CD 2.0 and interactive CD-ROM." VIDEO Clip MPEG 1 and 2 are the world's first frame accurate MPEG editing software. First to present MPEG -1 editing in 1995, with VIDEO Clip, VITEC has also developed a wide variety of MPEG -1 and MPEG -2 tools and utilities for the professional world as well as for the military and space industries.

<< RJ, you are buying more PHG at these levels?>>

LOL. Fred, it has been some time since I have lurked this thread. I hope that this is the only "aside" that you have sent my way. If not, I apologize for missing the others. The following may seem both self-serving AND fictitious, but it is true.
I sold PHG in the high 80's, low 90's (price, that is) before it made it's move over 100. Still have not re-entered.
Any forecast on the "legs" on the CUBE codec story??

Matrox Marvel G200.(Hardware Review)(Evaluation)

12/01/98
Computer Gaming World
COPYRIGHT 1998 Golden Empire Publications Inc.

The Marvel G200 is just a bit slower than the Millennium G200, which Matrox attributes to the use of slower SDRAM on the Marvel. Despite the lack of speed, this card is quite versatile. Think of it as the sport utility vehicle of graphics cards. It won't get you there as fast as a funny car, but you can really load it up.

Inside the Marvel G200 package is a blue, contoured plastic box that connects to the back of the Marvel G200. The box contains connections for video-in and video-out, audio-in and audio-out (including cable connection) and a cable TV or antennae input. The Marvel G200 uses the Zoran motion JPEG CODEC chip to capture and compress video at resolutions at 30fps at 704x486 NTSC. We looked at the Marvel G200 TV (available only in North America), which also has an onboard TV tuner. The blue breakout box, which connects to the card via a three-foot cable, makes connections to camcorders, VCRs, and cable TVs much easier. This is truly a "convergence" graphics accelerator. The only thing you might want to add to it is a hardware DVD decoder, available separately. Matrox tosses in a copy of Avid Cinema, a handy nonlinear video-editing package formerly available only on the Macintosh.

Until now, the ATI All-in-Wonder Pro had the field virtually to itself, but the Marvel G200 ups the ante for this type of Swiss Army Knife product. And if the 3D performance isn't quite up to the competition, you can always toss in a Voodoo2 card.

CGW Rating: 4 Stars Matrox Marvel G200

$349 for 16MB; $299 for 8MB.

Matrox, (514) 822-6320. www.matrox.com

Pros: Pretty good overall performer; lots of video goodies added in; good image quality; nice video editing package.

Cons: Performance doesn't stack up well against the competition.
