Barbara: See a good tax advisor concerning the wash rule. It does mean you can not buy the stock back again, only that you can not take the loss immediately.

The loss occurred by your "mistake" will be added to the overall net from what you would buy today, and whenever you do sell. (IMO, at a profit).

Again, this is only a sketchy summary, so please see a real pro for the details. Maybe Colin can add something to help.
