You can get a bit trickier if you want and have enough assets.

Sell MRVC in taxable account and buy it right back in a sheltered account. Just like moving money from one pocket to another. Wash sale rules only apply to taxable accounts you might have.

<Somebody out there today is seeing some value in MRVC>

I think so too. If there ever was a day for MRVC to tank, it was last Friday what with the gloomy outlook for earnings 2-3 quarters out. Instead the stock put in a "hammer": it went down at the start touching 6 for about 3 seconds and then moved steadily up from there. I saw several large 50,000+ blocks at the ask. Technically this was about as much as anyone could hope for. Today, we're up on above average volume and essentially back to where we ended at Thursday's close. It looks to me as though the stock is being accumulated. Maybe somebody like Ascend is looking at MRVC's carrier class technology and the word is leaking out. If any sort of announcement like this is in the works, MRVC could be at 12+ overnight even given the spotty ST earnings outlook.

<My thoughts are to look to offset any cap gains I might have for 1998. That will still leave me plenty of shares. I want to be careful how I do this, as I want to be able to buy those shares back in 31 days-- if the stock looks good at that time. Otherwise, I just have to look for other investments that look better. >

Talk to your tax advisor to make sure this will work within your objectives, but if you have the cash, double up and sell the higher cost shares in 31 days....

Webdrone,

You've got it right. I also think that there are hotter small-cap companies (with little baggage and no earnings dissapointments...) out there right now. Even with the recent runup, I like VTSS, TXCC and LEVL.

About the train leaving the station.... I think Dan Spillane called this stock right about 2 years ago. (Dan also turned me onto VTSS...) I've, frankly, been dissapointed since it's initial run to 36. Pink helped cream this stock, and it was an eye opening event for me.

Now....since this stock has been deeply wounded, I don't suspect it will be a survivor as MRVC a year from now. If it's around 1 year from now as MRVC, it will still be in the low double digits. Believe me, if the technology is that good, this stock will be shopped.

However, to stay on their own, exciting technology isn't enough. You're starting to see the tip of the iceberg about lower hardware margins due to very extreme pricing drops to get and keep customers. You're seeing late technology deliverables. You're seeing higher costs for SG&A, with little management guidance on this (really got me mad about this...)

Frankly, I've lost confidence that they can be winners on their own.

Regards,
