intel thinking about 300mm? At this time we are preparing for 300-mm [production] with 0.13-micron
technology in the second half of 2002," according to Seligson, who is based at Intel's
headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif. "There are still several opportunities to get derailed
from that schedule," he noted, "but at the moment, that's the program's goal."

But the Intel executive is much more optimistic than he was last spring. "I don't see
anything significant on the tool side that is going to stop us," he said.

Sematech's International 300-mm Initiative (I300I) has been quietly working hard to
convince discouraged tool makers to continue their development programs and
equipment demonstrations. The plan is to have most of the necessary 300-mm tools
ready to go when chip markets have recovered, something that could happen as early
as the second half of 1999, based on recent industry forecasts.
