Nokia wins contract to supply the first dual band GSM network in the Philippines

(November 3, 1998) - Nokia and SMART Communications, Inc., have signed a contract for the supply of a full turnkey dualband GSM network. Nokia will be the sole supplier, providing equipment to cover both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequencies. The value of the first phase of deliveries is estimated at USD 40 million.

Deliveries will commence immediately and the multi-year contract will mean the provision of a GSM 900 national network in the Philippines, with the Metro Manila area having both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 coverage.

Under this agreement, Nokia will supply a complete GSM network to SMART, including its Mobile Switching Centres (MSC), Home Location Registers (HLR), Base Station Controllers (BSC), Base Stations (BTS), Short Message Service Centre (SMSC)and the Nokia NMS network management system. Additionally, Nokia will supply an extensive range of customer services.

" We chose Nokia because of their experience in the provision of total system solutions and their leadership in GSM 1800. With this contract our customers will benefit from high quality coverage, roaming options and an exciting range of additional mobile services in a digital network," comments Mr Olando Vea, President and CEO, SMART.

"SMART will now be able to provide a market-leading network solution for their customers, within a very short roll-out time," says
Mr. Claus Karthe, President, Nokia Philippines. "Nokia's high-quality GSM network will enable SMART to provide a range of value-added services to meet subscriber needs in this fast-growing and demanding market."

SMART Communications Inc., established in 1991, is a joint venture between First Pacific, NTT, and several local investors. SMART is licensed to deliver a national cellular mobile telephone system, international gateway facility, paging and local exchange carrier operations. SMART currently operates an analog ETACS network with over
750,00 subscribers, making SMART the largest cellular operator in the Philippines since February 1997. With the new GSM network, the company is now beginning its migration towards digital services.

With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 75 operators in 37 countries. Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900. Nokia has delivered dual band network base stations to a number of the world's leading operators. Nokia was the first manufacturer to gain type approval for a dual band base station.

Tero - Would like info on that FM radio/phone and I hear a rumor...

Thought that the idea of combining a radio and phone interesting, maybe a bit too gimmicky though(?). Just proves Nokia, yet again are innovative and at least try something different. Didn't find it on the Nokia web site, can you direct to where the information is.

To answer someone's question, yes Eastern Europe is still deploying analog infrastructure.

I also believe their will be some news soon regarding the lower analog spectrum in Europe: Hearing a rumor that 450Mhz may go digital, which will be interesting news for operators that have moved analog customers to digital.
