We have no effective missile defense. It is staggering how many people think we do. Clinton has fought every initiative towards one with everything he's got. The Repubs snuck a little bit of money for research past him in this budget.

Sorry, but our anti missile technology is limited to low altitude defense of relatively small areas from short range missiles. Even in the Gulf War ,we were able to intercept only some of the primitive short range Scuds, and even in those stopped the warhead was often undamaged. I doubt that Sadam has anything that could come close to reaching America, but if he did there is no defense.

brees - <<OT>> technologically, intercontinental ballistics is a VERY difficult arena - much more so than shorter range weapons.

BTW - in Desert Storm - we hardly got the chance to knock their fighters out of the sky; Saddam sent his planes and pilots out of harm's way early on after the first few encounters.

The effectiveness of the Patriot anti-missile system was somewhat overstated. Hitting an intercontinental-range ballistic missile (much higher velocity) is well beyond the design capabilities of anything we are presently deploying.

IMO, the danger from the Islamic extremists is in more clandestined and covert attacks here in the US using more reliable, shall we say "technologies."
