I didn't hear you complain about Dwight citing some number from somewhere about 1000 PBA's in Ohio in 1985, 10 years before the terminology was even invented. Daniel: Just because the term PBA was not in use in 1985, does not mean that D&X abortions were not performed. Anyone with a modicum of common sense would know that. Legal abortions in the United States Year Number 1985 1,588,100 1992 1,540,000 References: United States Bureau of Commerce, Department of the Census. National Data Book and Guide to Sources, Statistical Abstract of the United States . 1990, 110th edition. Washington, DC: United States Government Printing Office. Table 101, "Legal Abortions, By Selected Characteristics: 1973 to 1985." Also: annual statistics from the Centers for Disease Control Abortion Surveillance Unit and the Alan Guttmacher Institute in the Alan Guttmacher Institute's Family Planning Perspectives .geocities.com Now, here is the State of Ohio abortion statistics:infinet.com as you can see, there were 705 abortions there of fetuses at 20 weeks gestation and over, in 1985. That's 2% out of 36263 abortions total in the state of Ohio. There were 9885 abortions where the age of the fetus was not reported. Extrapolating 2% of those is another 198, which brings the total induced abortions after 20 weeks gestation in the State of Ohio in 1985 to 903. according to the Planned Parenthood website, the method for abortion in the second trimester (4th through 6th week) is D&E. D&X is a form of D&E, and there are no statistics on the number of D&X abortions. Therefore, the number of 1,000 D&E/D&X abortions in the State of Ohio is probably right in the ballpark. As I said when I first mentioned the 1,000 number, that was the number I remembered from somewhere . Either the source I was remembering from rounded up or estimated, or I did. In any event, I was 11% higher than I can account for here, but keeping in mind that an estimated 4% of abortions are not reported due to independent physicians who perform a small number of abortions annually, my 1,000 number was only 7% high..
