Sun:
they are not even thinking how *bad* longer term it really would be to announce such a product even if 3Dfx could produce it in such a short time.

I totally agree. If, after all this BS about keeping quiet, they blow everything by announcing their next generation product way in advance I'd be disappointed. However, the company MUST eventually announce the product. My preference would be one month in advance. By then, inventory preorders would start showing up at Ingram and EB anyway and there would be no way to keep the secret. That said, if they announce their next generation product I want to see it by January first at the latest.

Bottom Line: I don't think 3dfx is that stupid. After all of this talk about hurting retail sales I don't think they'll do any big announcements way in advance. That leaves either of 2 scenarios.

a) We've got a next generation chipset almost ready for production
b) Nothing will be announced

I've been hearing some rumblings lately about 3dfx's next generation chipset (yes chipset not chip), although I was unable to confirm an announcement for Comdex like Chip said. The Banshee2 announcement seems to be a given.

TDFX has raised expectations by making the V2 comparison and saying they will knock our socks off. They may be setting up a Banshee 2 board with dual textures and 125mhz OEM chip. They may announce Rampage. Who knows! However, the one thing that is certain is that they are spending good money on premium space at COMDEX, they are spending serious cash on a PR firm and a top notch advertising agency. CREAF has bought up a bunch of their stock and with the cash they have could buy a much more. Regardless of their stated intention, they have to be somewhat concerned. COMDEX is THE best opportunity they will have to show some results. Cheap V2 SLI's just won't cut it given TNT's inroads into the OEMs and some of the reviews. Their is a flicker of doubt in some minds as to whether TDFX still has the goods. I will be extremely disappointed if they miss this window of opportunity. IMO they've got to put their name out there to reassert their position of dominance. Yeah, maybe I'm setting myself up for disappointment but then again maybe a little disappointment might be what I need to reconsider my long term investment in this company. Joe C.
