At another point, asked whether Microsoft was competing with an Apple Computer Inc. video technology, he answered, "depends on what you mean by compete."

Mr. Boies then asked if Microsoft had tried to get Apple to limit its efforts in multimedia software. Mr. Gates said his company and Apple had simply discussed ways to make QuickTime more popular. But Mr. Boies asked the question again, and Mr. Gates said, "I'm not aware of anything that was directly aimed at those things, no."

"Are you aware of anything that was indirectly aimed at those things?" Mr. Boies asked. Mr. Gates shifted in his seat and cleared his throat. More than 20 seconds later he replied, "No.">>
