It's also service contracts like this and ecommerce consulting and Tivoli, and so on and on, that is going to keep IBM the best technology company in the world.

IBM unit signs $110 mln, 5-year deal with trucking firm
SOMERS, N.Y., Nov 2 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp.(NYSE:IBM - news) is set to announce Tuesday that its IBM Global Services unit has signed a $110 million, five-year deal with trucking firm Consolidated Freightways Inc.(Nasdaq:CFWY - news).

The agreement calls for Consolidated Freightways to outsource its computer operations to IBM's computer services and consulting arm, which will manage them for the firm through 2003.

IBM Global Services, which comprises about a third of the computer maker's revenues, said in a statement that it has signed $24 billion in new services contracts through the third quarter, including 27 contracts greater than $100 million in 1998.

We are just a few points away from being at an all time high and once we get there, there is nothing but smooth sailing north for the stock price.

Jules, IBM has been thriving in the environment you describe for years now. The only things new are the $ amount and Intel processor names. Do you believe that a company with over a quarter of a million employees can only fight on one front? It seems to me that they can offer low price PCs without reducing focus in other areas. Indeed, one IBM strength is the breadth of its technology portfolio. Regards, Scott

how much money does IBM have in cash?

IBM has three options:

1. continue its stock buyback program since IBM is currently undervalued

2. simply increase the dividend

3. split the stock.

IMO, IBM should buyback another 1 billion dollars of stock and then once that objective is completed, raise the dividend by 25%. if after all of this the stock price is around 190 to 210, the stock should be split 3 for 1.

that way the dividend payout will come from the capital gains of the bot back stock.

this is the best way for long term shareholders to get the best value out of the company and still provide cash leverage for R&D and M&A.
