<< What do you think about the estimate of $billion worth
of sales by 2002? IMO, this seems somewhat conservative,unless it's a semi-niche
area.>>

Joe, my hunch would be conservative, considering EMC's market cap is over $30B.
Customers pay big bucks for data center type solutions.

gfr fan,

I realized that in my post I didn't put a number. The press
release I read said $2Billion. But, from your response, I
think you agree.

Of course, I don't know that much about this new storage
technology to know how much market share it will take....
But storage capital expense is hugh and getting bigger.

regards,
joe

Advertisements in China for Networking Products Market Top $2.4 Million
BW - 08:11 a.m. Nov 03, 1998 Eastern

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998--Advertising
expenditures by networking product vendors in China topped $2.4
million dollars for the first half of 1998, a recently released
channel survey and industry report by Advanced Forecasting-HuiCong
(AFHC) disclosed.

The Switch market -- in terms of appearance frequencies and
dollars expended -- commanded more than 56 percent.

Cisco, pursued closely by Intel, leads the pack for appearances
and expenditures for Switches with 18.8 percent share. Intel
follows with 18.1 percent and D-Link with 13.8 percent.

The report's research is based on a survey that includes more
than 1,200 networking distributors and interviews with about 60
vendors. The two samples are distributed over 30 cities in
mainland China. AFHC also developed a proprietary index of
appearance rates and ranking by measuring relevant
advertisement information from over 400 trade media sources in
China that is detailed in the report.

Dr. Peng Fu, chief analyst for AFHC, maintains "Expenditures
on advertising for networking products increased a whopping
100 percent over the same period for the prior year. Clearly it's
another indicator on how the networking products market is
heating up."

"Theoretically, the advertisement expenditure ratio is positively
correlated with future market share. And that's the case here.
Advertising expenditures are closely correlated but do not follow
exactly that of unit sales market share.

"3Com and Bay Networks are two players, for example, that
rank first (25% market share) and third, respectively, in overall
units sold in the switch market. Yet, their advertising
expenditures in the first half of the year fall short of the top
three. Increased efforts on the part of both unit market share
leaders are expected during the second half of the year," Fu
predicted.

"AFHC's Channel Survey & Industry Report: Networking
Products Market in China" is one of a series of reports from
AFHC. The report, updated twice yearly, includes primary data
from the channel on market size and shares, pricing for four
networking segments, advertising, and distribution.

In addition to historical data, the report includes information on
over 30 network distributors and vendors like Bay Networks,
Hewlett-Packard, and Madge, currently operating in China. It
also provides insight on features of the Chinese market and key
strategies to penetrate it.

Advanced Forecasting-HuiCong is a joint venture of Advanced
Forecasting, a leading forecasting Silicon Valley company, and
HuiCong, China's largest High-Tech Market Research and
Advertising Group of approximately 2,500 employees.

AFHC's data collection capabilities in China provides its clients
direct access to the Chinese market for a broad selection of
industries and over 100 product categories -- down to the board
level. It also delivers quantitative and qualitative information on
market trends via subscription services, reports, and a variety of
customized consulting services.

Industries include automobile, broadcasting & TV equipment,
chemical, office automation, personal computer, and
telecommunication.
