Another plausible reason may be the one mentioned in the following article:

In the paragraph on "Death of Speculation" Dave Kansas says: " The lenders, those that fuel leverage-driven
investment moves, had pulled in the lines. No more big lending to help spur a big currency bet."

It is quite probable that the word did go out : "No more reckless lending to the hedge funds!" Sort of like "The Empire Strikes back?"
