Pigboy - Re: " Will it still be Fabs D1B and 18 that will be the first two Merced captians starting at the end of next year?"

Definitley D1B will be running the first Merced chips - but Intel is indicating these will be run BEFORE the end of next year.

On several occasions, Intel representatives have stated that Merced would SAMPLE by mid-1999.

As for FAB 18, they will most likely be running the Coppermine and Cascades chips - and perhaps another "interim" 0.18 micron CPU. Merced production at Fab 18 may not be necessary as volume requirements will be low for the first 6 or 12 months.

Re: " And does Intel currenlty have 13 or 14 Fabs making CPUs?"

The number of Pentium/Pentium II/Celeron fabs is probably closer to 6 or 7.
