FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Agranat's EmWeb Embedded Web Server Allows Developers To Add Web Functionality to Sun's ChorusOS and JavaOS.
Maynard, MA (6 October 1998) - Agranat Systems today announced the availability of Agranat's EmWeb embedded HTTP server technology for JavaOS and ChorusOS embedded operating system platforms, enabling developers to quickly and easily add Web management capabilities to a wide range of products. With EmWeb, ChorusOS and JavaOS developers can create and deploy Web-based management capabilities in many products, such as Internet access devices, set-top boxes, and communications equipment.
"Embedded developers realize they need to go beyond desktop solutions and seek out new methods to incorporate Internet services," said Samir Mitra, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Sun Microsystems' Consumer and Embedded Software. "We are pleased to see companies like Agranat Systems providing developers with a quick and user-friendly way to monitor, configure, and control devices via a standard browser running on anything from a NC to a pager." "The market for embedded Web servers is hot," said Barry Charton, Vice President of Business Development at Agranat Systems. "It's only a matter of time before every device with a microprocessor will be equipped with an embedded Web server so it can be monitored and controlled over a network. The combination of Sun's powerful thrust into the embedded market and EmWeb as a plug-and-play component to ChorusOS and JavaOS will enable us to reach and provide significant value to a large number of developers."
The EmWeb technology is fully HTTP/1.1 compliant and provides a number of unique features and benefits, including the ability to run as a single task, efficiently serving multiple simultaneous requests, while not unnecessarily diverting the embedded CPU from its primary function. In addition, support for the latest authentication standards, multi-platform distributed processing, file upload for configuration files and firmware upgrades, as well as sophisticated form processing for device management, places EmWeb at the top of the industry. EmWeb's efficient implementation results in a very small footprint, typically around 25K bytes, for a fully featured HTTP/1.1 server, further minimizing impact on overall system performance.
Sun ChorusOS is a feature-rich, real-time operating system and development environment specifically designed for the most demanding high-performance applications, such as those required in the telecommunications arena. Its unique componentized OS architecture allows ChorusOS configurations to scale seamlessly from very small embedded instances (10K bytes) to high functionality, transparently distributed platforms. Reliable enough to be used by seven out of 20 of the world's leading telecommunications providers, the ChorusOS is used by Alcatel transport to control the biggest railway exchange in Europe. Fault tolerance enablers provide continuous "uptime" to deliver telecommunication standards of 99.997 percent uptime or only 3 minutes of downtime per year.
Sun JavaOS is a family of small and efficient operating environments optimized for distributed network computing using Java technology. Based on open standards including the Java platform, TCP/IP and HTML, JavaOS provides affordable access to network services, security and central management to any user, anytime, using any device. Part of the Sun JavaOS family, JavaOS for Consumers is the premier operating system for a new range of network connectable consumer devices used for communications, entertainment and mobile computing. Sun JavaOS for Business provides rich functionality for business use in specific function, task-oriented applications such as those used by bank tellers, insurance agents and travel agents.
"With the increasing pressure to deliver Web manageable products, we need tools to help us do that in a short time frame. EmWeb provides an unprecedented embedded Web server technology that finally matches the high performance and intelligence of the JavaOS and ChorusOS platforms," said Peter Spreadborough of Lucent Technologies. "Since time-to-market is so critical today, being able to quickly create powerful, user-friendly Web interfaces with EmWeb gives us that competitive edge we need to empower a whole new generation of Internet-powered devices. EmWeb with JavaOS and ChorusOS provide an unbeatable combination in today's quickly growing embedded marketplace."
Availability EmWeb and its ChorusOS and JavaOS plug-and-play adaptation comes with the EmWeb product as a porting file. It is available today for both the JavaOS and ChorusOS on all popular development platforms and integrates seamlessly without any additional work required by the developer.
