Tim, thanks for the link to the article over on AMAT that describes Intel's (analyst's beliefs anyway) fab equipment buying plans. During the conference call on October 13, Andy Bryant said Intel didn't have capital expenditures estimated for 1999 yet, which I thought unusual from that close of a date. Now, if the analyst is correct, it looks like spending is going up. That's great, as long as it means demand is up along with it. IMO, Y2K looks like it will be a pretty good sized kicker to the corporate IT budget. Let's hope no "nuclear winter" occurs after that, as some are predicting. I personally doubt it as there are too many other phenomena that cause purchases, which are all in various timing phases, for one thing to cause a big down.

Tony

...In the
beginning of the year, we had anticipated that Intel would start
ordering for
0.18 micron equipment in the summer. By the end of September,
orders for
equipment from Intel were still anemic. However, we believe that
Intel has now
stepped up orders for equipment. We believe that the company is
upgrading its
fab in Ireland and building out the shell in Israel (which had been
on hold);
and we expect Intel to expand its fab in Chandler, Arizona, for
0.18 micron. We
believe that when all these orders are placed, they could amount to
as much as
$1 billion to $1.5 billion.

Timothy - Re: "AMAT thread a H&Q report that include some info on Intel:"

Thanks.

That is good news if true.

The Fab 18 (in Israel) 0.18 micron outfitting ( expansion) I believe - has been in the plans for over a year.
