From my limited knowledge of computer programming and web-page design, I think that it would be much easier to make a new web-site rather than do major surgery on the existing one. This is especially true since the main web-page designer now is not the same designer of the existing site. The search, new account set-up, purchasing, etc. routines can easily be transferred from the old site to the new.
