I have no doubt that the analysts' estimates are educated guesses at best. Just look how off they were 6 months ago. They dropped the estimates like crazy (after the stock prices had fallen 50% or more) and half the time the companies still weren't able to make the estimate this quarter.

Unfortunately, I agree with you, stock prices will be much more predictive of earnings growth than the analysts' estimates. But it does help some to look at the estimates to compare companies within the sector I think. They all will be subject to the price of oil though as you say.
