3. As component branding continues to become less important to the consumer, the choices of vendors for the PC makers will revert to a price/performance matrix. Others on this thread understand this far better than I do, but I suspect Intel is better positioned to compete in this arena.

Everything else held even, you would be correct. Unfortunately for Intel, their investors have much higher expectations than AMD investors. AMD can undersell Intel parts and keep their investors happy. The only way for Intel to compete with AMD pricing is if Intel is willing to accept a drop in margins, profits, and ultimately the stock price.
