CD-R drives can currently be purchased for around 200 bucks.

CD-R and CD-RW are fine for some applications, but for other jobs, you need the speed of magnetic media.

In any case, this debate has been hashed out repeatedly here. Meanwhile, there have been products which were going to wipe Iomega off the map "just around the corner" for a couple of years now. And yet there are now close to 18 million Zip drives out there, and over two million Jaz.
