Volume (in cubic meters) X Density (in tons/cubic meter) = Tons

All I can add is that this density factor is also called SG (Specific Gravity) by several geologists.

As well, the density can run lower than the numbers given by Elisabeth. Porous materials and highly oxidized stuff have density as low as 1.7.
