Seybold Article, Other Random Stuff

- Yes, the Seybold article is great. However, it is over a year
old (with some annotations to update to the Portico
name). Not that it matters, the logic of it still holds.

- After looking more at the Dataranger deal, I'm even
more pleased. This is a dog of a business that the new
gmgc had no reason to pursue. Hardware/software integrated
products for vertical markets? Competing with other
hardware firms and CE? Razor-thin margins? Ug, no thanks.

At first I thought it would have been better for Markman to
simply scrap the whole effort. However, the $3M they put into
their minority stake probably isn't much greater than it
would have cost to terminate the effort and employees.
And, who knows, maybe something will come of it. In any
event, now gmgc is admirably focused and presents a
pure internet/voice service play without weird divergent
efforts. Schramm is a wonderful man and I wish him the
best, but I think he's got his work cut out for him.
(For one thing, only $8M in capitalization - hardly a
rich budget given headcount and type of business Dataranger
is in. But - no longer our problem!).

- Now the new gmgc is free to do deals with all comers
without being perceived as a potential device/OS threat. This
has to make them more attractive to Microsoft, for instance.

- I don't buy the line that the quarter numbers were
delayed because gmgc "was too busy". As I've said in
the past, I believe a deal with Bellsouth will happen
this month. Thus it seems likely to me that a carrier
or partner announcement is the motivation for the delay.
We'll know soon enough. (That post about the lack
of southern resellers raised my conviction on this
point a number of notches).

- GMGC is executing in such a wonderful fashion. Yes, I am
in love with this stock, I admit it. But I continue to
believe it is such a rare opportunity.

Good luck everyone. Hopefully we'll make serious
money again very soon.
