More on SAN Networking Strategies [EMC, 3Com]

infoworld.com

<<A few thousand feet beneath EMC's Data Tone vision, however, the company named three essential elements of next-generation SANs: storage systems, network components, and heterogeneous servers. >>

<<EMC also announced Fibre Channel hub connectivity among Windows NT servers and EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, and several additional options for direct server-to-storage Fibre Channel connectivity.

EMC also extended its range across the breadth of Wintel vendors, announcing Fibre Channel hub connectivity for Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Dell, and Siemens NT servers. The company also added direct Fibre Channel connectivity for Symmetrix systems to the Unisys ClearPath family and Groupe Bull Escala Unix servers.

"In respect to switch connectivity, we play with everybody in this market," said Jim Rothnie, EMC senior vice president and chief marketing technical officer.

EMC's high-end storage hardware and management software, and their connectivity to a range of Unix and NT servers, is familiar to most high-end users, but the company's mention of network components might surprise some IT professionals. But networking seems to have arrived in SANs, with 3Com's announcement last week of its entry into the SAN marketplace. 3Com will extend its reach into SAN markets on Wednesday via its partnership with Gadzoox Networking, the first major development agreement in 3Com's SAN strategy. >>

<<EMC, though it has developed a range of networking partners, including McData and HP, will have to continue to develop the networking end of the Storage Area Network, said senior analyst Tom Lahive of Dataquest, in Lowell, Mass.

"It's important because [EMC] will need more networking capability to connect EMC boxes to unlimited numbers of NT servers," Lahive said. >>
