Cohu vs. TER

Has anyone noticed how COHU has really lagged TER over the past few weeks. COHUs 3rd quarter release was viewed pretty negatively by the market whereas TERs was viewed positively. Interestingly enough they were not that far apart on an earnings basis and TER played some games with taking an extraordinary charge for inventory and I kind of wonder if their order cancelations in the 2nd quarter just represented an earlier cleanup of that problem. How convenient.

For the past year plus TER and COHU had almost always tracked one anothers share price and both are backend companies with strong positions in their relative markets being test equipment vs. test handling equipment.

Now TER is at almost $32 a share and COHU is at $16. What an incredible divergence in a short period of time. Three alternatives, TER is over priced, COHU is underpriced, or COHU technology is being eclipsed by new equipment offerings. Which is it? Obviously I hope that COHU is just slow in responding to the semi-equip stock price rebound. Their customers are definitely beginning to look a lot better financially (Intel, Motorola, and Micron). The next few months will be very interesting to follow!

Good luck.
