PartyTime, Brady: I already explained how I would do a transition to an internal server: seamlessly. But here it is in more detail.

It is NOT difficult to do, I've done it myself many times. Plumbers don't change pipes with the water on because it would make a mess. Fortunately, changing a server with the water on doesn't. These kind of changes are done EVERY day on the web, smoothly, and certainly without a 2 week outage. Even if you totally botch it, the worst-case scenario is being down for maybe a day.

You keep two servers - at the old address and the new address - running while DNS records are updated. It takes a while (typically no longer than 4 hours, but for safety it's best to keep the dual servers up for 24 hours) for the DNS records to propagate throughout the Internet.

That's the case if they simply want to move the server in-house, while retaining the ads.softbank.net domain name. The in-house server would have a different IP (numeric) address. The DNS record which is updated makes the connection between the domain name and the IP address.

Now, if they want to get off of the ads.softbank.net domain name - which is probably a real good idea and should have been done ages ago, since they are no longer a part of Softbank - they have a bigger logistic problem. They need to get all of their web sites that place their ads to change the URLs in their HTML pages - a pretty big undertaking to coordinate. Many of the web sites won't want to bother with that.

To handle that transition it would be best to stay in the good graces of Softbank, and maintain the old domain name for several months, while instructing new customers to use the new one, and gently prodding old customers to switch URLs. Both domain names can point to the same server, BTW - so there's no need to maintain two servers for months.

If the webmasters at ZuluMedia can't handle this (but I'm sure they know perfectly well how to do this and there is some other, probably money-related problem...) I'd be happy for a fee to drive up to El Segundo some Saturday and straighten them out. Have them contact me. :) But, I figure I'm probably not at the top of their list of consultants, so you might suggest that they get ahold of Matty, whom I'm sure would be equally adept.

Brady, I'm sorry to note you don't read past three paragraphs, particularly if the first one makes sense. I hope you do better with books. Humor and points, of course, are always different in that each person is unique. But as each person is unique, each person has a different structuring of needs. What you left out, my friend, is that I don't write long paragraphs. Good luck with your reading levels.
