After reading through the comments regarding Q's conference call, I think most everyone is right on. From my perspective the call had a unique sense of either hostility, arrogance or "we know more than you" or a combination of all. The environment felt different from past conference calls, well beyond the normal low key cautious approach. Taichi and J Scurci's, Jeff's comments about analysts being in the dark, embarrassed, less than awed, "used to spoon feeding" sums up Q's investor relations climate or a lack thereof. I'd like to here someone's comments regarding Rich Salpizio's first conference call. I thought he was the highlight of the call (A+ effort). He was refreshing, one could get a sense of confidence and he seamed much more "open" being able to answer questions much better than Tony Thornley. Speaking of Tony Thornley, I am sure he is an excellent CFO however he is dreadful when it comes to these conference calls. For example. The first question by JP Morgan was about gross margins and Q's ability to sustain 29% or even grow. Thornley goes into an immediate nondisclosure mode..although we're looking for improvement the mix of products may cause fluctuations in margins (no shit Tony). Later in the call BT Alex Brown talks again about margins on Gateways and the possibility of sequential gross margin growth, Tony again..We don't disclose. Then Rich speaks up: "Yes" were looking to get to 30%, Rich had earlier spoke about Q's efforts to reduce the cost on BOM's and Q's effort to improve margins even though ASP's would be declining. I was wondering why Tony would answer questions which appeared more suited to the President and COO. Maybe this will change in the future. Any comments from here would be appreciated. As far as reading reports about QCOM and Microsoft the next morning, I think it is very unfortunate from an investor relations point of view. I did get a laugh when the operator said "and the next question will be from Marc Cabi from CS First Boston..............."Mr Marc Cabi from CS First Boston"..........................Ok we'll go onto the next question... I would like to get any other insight on Q's production of phones of 1.4 million for Q4. I think the upside is that more yield should be expected from their 620,000 per month capacity (1.875 mil per quarter. My hope is that analysts will focus on the improvement in gross margins (29%)as a positive for the quarter and on a go forward basis. FWIT. Thanks. Web.
