Headline: BTI Selects Glenayre MVP Platform To Expand Its Offerings Into CLEC
Market

======================================================================
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies, Inc.
announced today BTI Telecom has selected the Glenayre MVP(R) modular voice
processing system to provide enhanced services to complement BTI Telecom's
offering in competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) markets throughout the
southeastern United States. The Glenayre enhanced services platform will be
installed in BTI Telecom's network switching centers in Atlanta and Raleigh,
with other locations to follow. Terms were not disclosed.
BTI will utilize the Glenayre enhanced services platform to complement its
service offering and provide business customers with much more than a voice
mailbox -- a true communications center that allows them to make the most of
every opportunity.
"We have used the Glenayre enhanced services platform since 1994 and we
know what the platform can do," said Sean Pflaging, vice president of network
services of BTI Telecom. "Glenayre's integrated platform has helped us deliver
the innovative services our customers want."
"BTI has achieved success the past years by ensuring their subscribers
have access to the latest in advanced messaging services such as Direct Dial,
Rapid Response and CONSTANT TOUCH(R)," said Dan Case, president of the
Glenayre Integrated Network Group. "Glenayre is pleased to broaden our
agreement with BTI and continue providing messaging solutions beyond call
answering."
The Glenayre MVP enhanced services platform enables service providers to
tailor their service offering to meet their customers' needs. An important
feature BTI is deploying is Direct Dial, which allows subscribers to use their
mailbox as a calling card when away from the office. Subscribers call into
their MVP mailbox and can then make multiple calls, including direct-dial long
distance calls, without the need to continually hang up and require a
dialtone. A companion feature, Automatic Callback, enables subscribers to
easily return messages from their mailbox with a single keystroke through a
call-back number obtained from the caller.
Fax messaging is another important feature for business customers and the
Glenayre platform enables BTI to integrate fax and voice messaging. Faxes can
be sent directly to a subscriber's voice mailbox and the subscriber is
notified that a fax message has been received. The fax is stored in memory and
can be printed from any fax machine when the subscriber is ready to retrieve
it.
CONSTANT TOUCH, a single number service, allows subscribers to combine all
personal and business telephone numbers -- pager, home, office, cellular,
and fax -- into a single number that will reach them anywhere, anytime.
BTI Telecom Corp., with headquarters located in Raleigh, N.C., is a
privately held company that provides integrated telecommunications services
primarily to small to mid-sized business customers concentrated in the
southeastern United States. BTI provides a broad array of services, including
local, long distance, Internet access, frame relay, high-speed data
transmission, data network management and paging. BTI is also a leading
provider of wholesale services to other telecommunications carriers.
BTI is building a 3,250-route mile fiber optic network from New York City
to Miami and from Atlanta to Nashville. The first leg of the network --
running from New York City to Washington, DC -- is now in service. The
entire length of the network is expected to be operational by the second
quarter of 1999. BTI also owns and operates an 80-mile fiber optic network
linking Raleigh, Durham, Cary and the Research Triangle Park area. BTI has
five network operations centers with DSC 600E and 600 digital switches in
Raleigh, Atlanta, Orlando, Dallas and New York City. BTI was founded in 1983
by Peter T. Loftin, its chairman and chief executive officer.
For over 30 years, Glenayre Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:GEMS) has been
