IN THE NEWS / Operational woes hit again at Syncrude Canada

CALGARY, Nov 4 - Syncrude Canada Ltd.'s operational woes hit again this week when a series of mechanical problems at its plant forced the oil sands miner and synthetic crude oil producer to cut production almost in half.

Syncrude, the world's largest producer of synthetic crude, has cut output to 120,000-130,000 barrels a day from about 230,000 after two separate pieces of equipment suffered upsets at the plant on Sunday and Monday, spokesman Peter Marshall said.

Full production was expected to resume this Monday following repairs to a "diluent recovery unit," which was hit with mechanical problems, and one of two big coker units, which suffered a small fire. There were no injuries as a result of the incidents, Marshall said.
