It just seems to me one hardware
platform can be used in both environments. Are the hardware architectural
requirements so different for purely routed environments from multi-service
switched environments?

Hagar,

There are architectural differences between routers and switches. Routers are mostly software driven and can be reprogrammed to handle packets in different ways, and even to emulate the functionality of switches. But this makes them much slower. On the other hand, switches are hardware driven--this makes them much faster, but much less flexible.
