Novell continues to dominate the NOS market - Butler Group reports

NOV 4, 1998, M2 Communications - Novell, UK -- According to a Butler Group report due to be released at the end of November, Novell continues to dominate the UK NOS (network operating system) market with 72.8 per cent of respondents using NetWare somewhere within their organisation. According to Novell, the figures demonstrate the continuing success of NetWare and put the advance of NT into perspective.

The results from one of the broadest and most comprehensive surveys, Butler Direct's survey of 6289 companies, show that only 27.2 per cent of companies have adopted Windows NT as their sole NOS at the expense of other operating systems. A further 21.3 per cent have both NetWare and NT - the target market for Novell's NDS for NT product, which manages NT better than Microsoft products in a mixed NT/NetWare environment.

The world-wide deployment figures show that Novell has an installed base of 3.8 million servers and 79 million nodes/users whereas Microsoft has 2.2 million servers and 44 million nodes/users. According to the Butler Group report, it seems that the perception that Novell has less market share than Microsoft is based only on Microsoft's aggressive marketing strategy and positioning, rather than reality.

The Butler Group adds that "the continuing delay to the introduction of Microsoft Windows NT5 offers Novell a window of opportunity", in which to extend market share further. Derek Venter, regional product marketing manager, NetWare and NDS, comments: "While the Butler report is reassuring reading, we believe that thanks to changes brought about by Eric Schmidt our CEO, Novell now has far more than a 'window of opportunity'. It now has a clear business strategy and strong directory enabled product offerings to make Novell and NDS the strategic choice for the long term."

Venter adds: "Due to the growing complexity of IT networks and the need to manage more and more devices securely and effectively, enterprises are seeing in increasing numbers, that a directory is a pre-requisite in today's IT environments. Novell Directory Services (NDS) is used by 50 million people and has earned its place as the de facto standard. This is just the beginning - we intend to keep and extend our directory lead while bringing to market a set of products that demonstrate the full power of the directory."

The recent release of NetWare 5 confirms the findings of the Butler Group report: "Novell is now able to offer a well-balanced set of products capable of delivering secure network computing." NetWare 5 delivers superior management and control to growing networks and helps to integrate business networks and the Internet more efficiently. It offers the highest levels of network reliability, scalability, performance, and security with the lowest cost of network ownership. And it offers robust and scalable support for the applications customers need to run their businesses through the year 2000 and beyond.
