The modern Democrats are the same people who owned slaves or were pro-slavery. They made many impassioned arguments on behalf of the rights of the owners of slaves. It took a war to free the slaves. Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was the one who took it upon himself to interpret the Constitution for himself, as leader of the Executive Branch. In the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln directly defied the US Supreme Court, which had just ruled in the Dred Scot Decision, that slaves were the property of their owner. I pray God that we get another leader some day like Lincoln, and then we can begin the fight.
