"...he really made it seem like his business was sick, not making a strong statement about ongoing Worldcom business and repeatedly implying that Ciena's customer base is in transition."

True. Business isn't very good. Lots of competition. Cramer's question about financing is particularly apt in that LU could easily "finance" a lot of business away from CIEN in this environment. That's one reason why the stock was at 8 a couple days ago. But, at least in my opinion, honesty is a plus. Doesn't mean I'll buy here, but at least I'll believe what Nettles says in the future.

Doughboy,

I agree. Also, he mentioned they're betting on start-ups for future revenue. This is flawed in it's fundamental application. First of all, startups would not need DWDM initially for as startups they aren't experiecing fiber exhaust. Right? Second, they would be spending their capital dollars on more basic interoffice and loop equipment like DLC and DCS systems not DWDM. DWDM is a "after-the-fact" product that would bandaid an otherwise exhaust situation and proves in when compared to deploying additional fiber optic cable. Startups don't have this problem. If they need bandwidth, they'll simply start at the OC-192 rate and grow as the equipment grows. Just my thoughts since I'm in this telecom industry and have been for 15 years.
