Goldman Sachs' Mariscal: Fundamentals In Brazil 'Not Bad'

Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Despite a selloff in Brazilian markets last month, the
fundamentals of certain sectors of that economy are relatively firm and offer
some opportunity, according to Jorge Mariscal, director of Latin American
equity research for Goldman Sachs & Co.

"The selloff was more the result of risk increasing rather than fundamental
growth or earnings power deteriorating," Mariscal said in an interview on
CNBC Wednesday.

"Once risk perceptions are coming down, people are beginning to look
again at the fundamentals, and the fundamentals are not that bad," Mariscal
said.

"There are a lot of restructuring stories in Brazil (and) privatization stories,"
he said. "Companies that are not very sensitive to the business cycle are
likely to do very well."
