I have to agree with your observations about both companies.

However:

The problems with CPU are not that bad, and are not the case in most of the stores. I believe that the company is quickly ramping up its customer service and restructuring its sales model, that's why they are opening up larger superstores and closing or remodeling many of the older operations. The company is reinventing itself, and that's a good sign.

The fact of the matter is that CPU has conquered most of the computer retailing space, either through acquisition (Computer City) or overwhelming competitors. Like Costco, it is another category killer. Don't underestimate CPU management.

WSJ article in today's Texas edition agrees with your assessment of CPU:
wsj.com

But this seems to apply to any of the major computer (and many other) retailers in my experience.
