World's biggest firms see high technology as key 11:53 a.m. Nov 04, 1998 Eastern CANNES, France, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Most of the world's biggest firms believe the purchase of a wide variety of high technology devices will be vital to their growth over the next five years, a conference was told on Wednesday. ''By 2003, over 80 percent of the world's top 1,000 companies and major enterprises will have adopted network computing, personal digital assistants, database mining and desktop video-conferencing,'' Gartner Group analyst Jackie Fenn said in a speech. Fenn, speaking at Gartner's annual European conference, Symposium ITxpo98, said many information access devices had appeared in the market, but only a couple of personal digital assistants -- 3Com Corp's Palm Pilot and Psion Plc's products -- had been succesful. This was because these devices only offered limited functions such as electronic calendars and contacts. Fenn said as more devices are offered using more reliable technology, and cheaper delivery systems using wireless, corporations will find them crucial to their operations. Fenn said a recent survey by U.S. information technology research company Gartner asked which advanced or emerging technologies they had already deployed or were planning to purchase in five years. ''Most industries in the survey showed high levels of activity or interest in a common set of technologies, including network computers, personal digital assistants, data mining and desktop video-conferencing,'' Fenn said.
