I second you again, Doug. The guy I wonder about is Colin Powell. Without knowing anything about George Jr., I'd say Powell has a better "character" reputation than anyone, but he was reluctant to enter the fray in '96, it seems largely due to the "trashing" phenomenon. Now? Things look far worse.

Then there's my guv, who I really, really wish would make a serious run. He wants it, too. I'd find that all quite entertaining, he has the home state press totally cowed. He wouldn't know what hit him on the national level, if people started looking into his background seriously.

Cheers, Dan.

>>Accordingly you will perhaps understand my viewpoint---it is the RR Republicans and the media who have, for own different reasons, trashed the Presidency.<<

Oh man, don't even start that BS with me, I've been up and down this road with you before on this and I'm not going to waste my time on this question. Suffice it to say that it is Bill Clinton, and Bill Clinton alone who has trashed the office and the resultant mess will no doubt hinder potential good candidates like Texas Bush from running. What I'm really talking about is the "politics of personal destruction" which Bill Clinton has just about single handedly "raised" to a fine art with his devil dogs like Carville and Begala. Not many decent people will be willing to put up with that kind of s***, and I wouldn't blame them. Clinton's no doubt had an apt pupil in Al Gore, they know how trashing opponents has worked in the past so I fully expect more of the same from their ilk. We've already had a dem on this thread insinuating that Texas Bush was a recovering alcoholic because he admitted to "partying" too much when he was young. I just hope we still have a few good people left out there willing to run the attack gauntlet. bp

Chenowith handily won today also although her scandal doesn't rank with Clintons'. Bush will likely test the waters in 2000. No candidate will admit at this early date, unless they are a longshot. Longshot candidates need all the time and the publicity they can get to raise the funds and mindshare. The mainstream candidates never admit they are running till late fall before the election year since it leaves them open to scrutiny.

It'll be interesting in next week's PBS show "Once Upon a Time in Arkansas".

Clinton's conduct wasn't private. Clintons' conduct in the office was what trashed the office. He and Hillary have redefined the term "you get two for the price of one". So much now for the argument about complaints about releasing videotaped depositions. The Dept of Justice is making available the Bill Gates deposition.
