The specialist finds a place where 'supply' cross demand and that is generally the opening price. I have seen traders guage the opening bid/ask (which is sometimes posted seconds before the prints which might give youtime to get in a thirdmarket market order)... But to be honest, I havent been able to derive anything from it. perhaps someone could track data on the openign price relative to the opening bid ask, relative to opening futures, etc...
